Why Would a Healthy Child Require an Eye Exam?
Lise Anne Guay-Bhatia, M.D.

Pediatric Ophthalmologist of DuPage Medical Group

Lise Anne Guay-Bhatia, M.D.People often ask me why a healthy child would require an eye exam. The reality is that children can develop many eye issues, and early intervention is important. Vision develops throughout adolescence (from birth until around age 10) and any irregularity has the potential to halt the growth of perfect 20/20 vision. This is why an eye exam, to rule out abnormalities, is so important (this is especially true if there is a family history of significant eye disease). Intervention during the early years can often help a child develop excellent vision to last a lifetime.

An eye exam can also diagnose simple things, such as a need for glasses. Children who are nearsighted, have astigmatism, or have excessive farsightedness, often require glasses to see well and to develop perfect vision. An eye exam can also diagnose conditions such as Amblyopia (poor vision in one or both eyes), and Strabismus (misalignment of the eyes). Rarely, more serious diseases can be detected during a routine dilated eye exam. Some of these diseases are treated with glasses, patch therapy, and even eye muscle surgery.

Pediatric Ophthalmologists are eye surgeons who specialize in treating these diseases and deal with children on a daily basis. We can evaluate and treat eye conditions, caring for children with the patience and understanding that come from experience.
